The Oregon Coast

The Oregon coast is very cold and foggy.  So far i haven't seen the sun.  We are wet almost all of the time.  We have built a fort that the men have agreed to name Fort Clatsop to spend the winter in.  I have a special spot on a hill looking over the coast.  I wait there every day that I have off to see if any shop will come by.  Once I thought that I saw a whale, but it only came up once.   At night we have to write in candle light in front of the fire to keep warm.  The only food that we have to eat is fish.  Much less then we are used to.  The snow is just starting to fall and the men are getting the last things inside for the winter.

The Mountain Lady Slipper

As we rested on the mountain side beside the river, we came across a little glen full of beautiful flowers.  They looked like a lady's slipper.  They had three petals pointing outward from the center and a big petal that came down and cupped around like a little bowl.  The outer 3 petals were a deep brown red color and the cupped petal was a creamy white color.  The flowers grew up on green stalks and the leaves were a bright green.

Philadelphus Lewisii

Today Captain Lewis found a beautiful shrub.  It was a rounded shape and was 2 meters in height.  It had red and gray tendrils that reach outward. The leaves were oval and light green with a rough texture.  The flowers grew at the end of the stems, they had 4 white petals and many yellow stamens.  The flowers had a beautiful cent, a little like an orange blossom.  Sacagawea said that the indians used this plant for many purposes: the hard wood for hunting tools, furniture and pipes, while the bark and leaves were mixed together to make a soap.

Clarkia Pulcella

Today I'm writing about a special plant that we have found.  The other day Captan Lewis found a beautiful little flower.  It was a light purple, the petals were very narrow at the center and forked out to form a trident shaped point.  Lewis found it on the edge of a meadow, surrounded by little grasses.  He decided to name it in honor of William Clark.

Back in the Journey!

Hi everybody!!!

I am back from the fair!
I'm not quite sure about what I'm going to do for the rest of the journey but I was thinking about doing a little bit of many things.  I'm going to be bringing my violin in to play a couple of songs.  I also have a lot of the plants that Lewis and Clark found, in my yard.  Like I have a fig tree from Montecello.  My dad is a botanist so we have a lot of plants.  I am also thinking of cooking something for the group.  I have a great cornbread and scone recipe that are really easy so I might make them.
Thank you guys for letting me do what I needed to do!(fair)
and Cam, my goats name is Pipa.

Goats and Fair

Hi everybody!

I'm so sorry that I haven't been able to post anything.  I have had the most hectic days of my life in the past week!
I am going to be gone from the expedition for a week.  I have my goats at the fair and have to be there all of my time (besides school).  It's not like I don't have fun though...I get to see my friends that have goats that I don't get to see for years at a time.
If anyone of you would like to come over and see the goats (tons of babies and milking does and many more!) it would be a lot of fun! Just come down to the goat aile at the very far end of the fairgrounds and I (and my goats) will be there.
I will be showing on Saturday and Sunday so I will definitely be there.
Again I'm sorry about not having anything posted.
Hope to see you at the fair!

My Mess

Heather: She can be a great friend, loves to make people laugh and a great actress. I think that she will be a great addition to my mess!

Sophie: I can't wait to work with you! You will always be there to capture beautiful moments with your camera.  The fish better look out because Sophie will be there to catch them. We will never go hungry! If anyone ever needs any advice about there clothing then you should definitelyask Sophie, the fashion guru.

Christina: She will be there to help us concentrate but have fun at the same time. Our camps are going to be very clean and neat and sense we can't keep them that way Christina will!  She is always helpful and has a positive attitude.

Curtis: He will supply us with our food and will teach us how to hunt.  He loves music and will be happy to form a band for entertainment.  He will help us build any water craft that might be useful if we are exploring small creeks that the big boat will not take us.

Harrison: He will bring back sketches to illustrate our journey in ways that nothing else can. Ready to try any food, Harrison will be a great cook and supply us with good meals to keep us going.

Michael: He will always be there to help and to encourage.  He gets along with people very easily and is very willing to do any amount of work.

Cam: We will give you the boat so that you can navigate us through the rivers.  I can't wait to try your great pancakes! I'm sure that they will be appreciated.  Your sense of humor will help us laugh off any hardships!

Sarah: Well I don't really know where to start. She loves and is good at a lot of things and is ready to learn many new things as well. She can be there to help you or to give you advice on one of the many things she knows.

Sam:  He will be a great asset to our group.  He will bring music, a pen and a notebook ready to document our trip and his creative mind!

Joe:  He has a lot of experience with children. We will depend on you to help motivate us through hard times.  He can run ahead to see what's there and maybe find our camp for the night.  When we get there he will have our camp set up quickly and ready for the camp fire!

Chris: He will be there to think up a plan if anything goes wrong. He is brave and will entertain us with his dancing. He hopes to find gold.

Dear Captain John

I hope to find along the way different plants and animals to research and sketch.  I would also like to learn about the different languages and culture of the native people.  To learn of their music and art, old maps, water ways and myths.

Dear Captain John

I love playing music on my violin.  I play in the UCSB Middle East Ensemble as well as the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony.  I have a lot of animals and have grown up taking care of them, milking goats, cleaning out pens and collecting eggs.  They have had a great impact on my life and have been my best friends.  I also love to draw and paint from my imagination as well as from the world around me.  Plants are a special interest of mine.  Plants are wonderful to observe because they tell you about the different soils, weather and altitude.  I have been doing archery since i was 9 and have pretty good aim.  I have had a lot of experience with children. I have been baby sitting since I was 10.  I like to cook, mostly desserts but also some Middle Eastern dishes, falafals being my favorite.
